Older Adults

An older man goes to a bar because he wants to get out of his tiny New York apartment, and his friends tell him he spends too much time alone.

As he approaches the bar, he sees a younger woman smoking a cigarette and takes a risk to ask her for one. The young woman replies, “I’ll give you a cigarette, but I won’t talk to you.”

How is it possible to feel so alone in a city of 8 million people?

Society has a particular image of older people.

Popular TV portrays older women as “housewives” having “sex in the city,” living in fancy houses, driving expensive cars, and out with friends at parties.

But who are these women? The older women that come into therapy with us are not enjoying trendy restaurants or bars with their friends.

Many older women married young, raised children, and worked their whole lives. Their identity has shifted from wife to mother to employee, but what about just being a woman? What would it take for someone to be identified as who they truly are?
