Perinatal Mental Health focuses on ensuring a family’s overall well-being, from the planning stages of having a child until the child reaches two years of age.

Every family is different, and each has their unique set of challenges that place stress on the parents/parents-to-be.

Frequently, these stressors evolve into what we call Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADS). PMADS can make it difficult for a family to manage their daily lives without adequate support. It has no boundaries and can affect anyone who is in the process of growing their family.

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders include:

  • Depression/Anxiety in Pregnancy
  • Perinatal Panic Disorder
  • Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Perinatal Bipolar Disorder
  • Postpartum Psychosis

Risk factors for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders include but are not limited to:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • History of postpartum, clinical depression, or mood/anxiety disorder
  • Abrupt discontinuation of psychiatric medications
  • Strained relationship with intimate partner/family
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Traumatic past
  • History of pregnancy loss
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum (Extreme Morning Sickness)

Perinatal Mental Health services may entail preventive measures such as frequent screening for PMADS, integrative care management, pre- and post-birthing plans, and pharmaceutical and talk therapy.
